Mathematician
William Thurston (born October 30, 1946, in Washington, D.C., (10927978) and died August 21, 2012, in Rochester, New York) was an American mathematician known for his contributions to the field. He held dual citizenship in the United States.
Thurston was educated at the University of California, Berkeley, and the New College of Florida. The mathematician was awarded the Fields Medal in 1982 for his work.
He was a doctoral advisor to several notable mathematicians, including Richard Schwartz, Jeffrey Weeks, William Goldman, Steven Kerckhoff, David Gabai, Oded Schramm, William Floyd, Danny Calegari, Benson Farb, Igor Rivin, Yair Minsky, Richard Canary, and Richard Kenyon. Morris Hirsch was his own doctoral advisor.
