Stade Malherbe Caen

Article

French football club from the city of the same name. Founded November 17, 1913. The name of the club was in honor of the native of Caen, Francois de Malherba (1555-1628), poet and translator. It plays its home matches at the Michel D'Ornano Stadium, which has a capacity of 20,300 spectators. The club's highest achievement is reaching the League Cup final in 2005. The best result in the history of the club's performance in the French Championship was the fifth place in the 1991/92 season.

Initially, the club included sections in many sports, but gradually football came to the fore. Stade Malherbe became one of the strongest amateur clubs in Normandy. The club played at the Venua Stadium (Velodrome). From 1934 to 1938 the first attempt was made to give the club a professional status. However, after World War II, Caen returned to amateur status and took part in 22 French championships for amateur clubs. In the 1970s, the club moved up to Ligue 2, then back down to Ligue 3.
