Renaissance Fusion is a start-up company developing High-Temperature Superconductors (HTS) for use in stellarator plasma devices and medical imaging. HTS operate at comparatively warmer temperatures compared to conventional superconductors. They are able to carry higher currents and therefore generate stronger magnetic fields. They have many potential applications including medical imaging and magnetic confinement fusion.
Stellarators are devices for the magnetic confinement of fusion plasmas. They are difficult to build due to their complicated design, but offer advantages such as simpler operation compared to similar magnetic confinement technologies like tokamaks. With a simplified construction process, Renaissance Fusion believes stellarator technology can produce fusion power-plants. The companies goals are:
- Demonstrating a new HTS manufacturing technique with potential benefits for medical imaging and stellarator simplification.
- Building the first high-field (10 T) HTS stellarator with thick, flowing liquid metal walls.
- Putting fusion electricity in the grid by 2032.
The company based in Grenoble, France was founded in 2019 by Francesco Volpe and Martin Kupp. Francesco Volpe is a physicist with over 20 years of experience in magnetized fusion plasmas. Martin Kupp is an associate professor for entrepreneurship at ESCP Europe Business School.
