Minecraft is a sandbox video game created by Swedish game developer Markus Persson and released by Mojang in 2011. The game allows players to build with a variety of different blocks in a 3D procedurally generated world, requiring creativity from players. Other activities in the game include exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay modes are available. These include survival mode in which the player must acquire resources to build the world and maintain health, creative mode where players have unlimited resources to build with and the ability to fly, adventure mode where players can play custom maps created by other players with certain restrictions, and spectator mode where players can freely move throughout a world without being affected by gravity and collisions, or without being allowed to destroy or build anything. There is also hardcore mode, which is similar to survival mode but the player is given only one life, and the game difficulty is locked on hard. If the player dies on hardcore, the player does not respawn, and the world is locked to spectator mode (as of 1.9).

The Java Edition of the game allows players to create mods with new gameplay mechanics, items, textures and assets. Minecraft received critical acclaim and has won numerous awards and accolades. Social media, parodies, adaptations, merchandise, and the MineCon convention played large roles in popularizing the game. It has also been used in educational environments (Minecraft Education Edition), especially in the realm of computing systems, as virtual computers and hardware devices have been built in it.

By late 2018, over 154 million copies had been sold across all platforms, making it the second best-selling video game of all time, behind Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft announced a deal to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition completed two months later. A spin-off game titled Minecraft: Story Mode has also been released. By mid-2018, the game had around 91 million active players monthly.

And what do you actually do in "Minecraft?" Build stuff? Perhaps you've seen some of the incredible worlds people have created from within "Minecraft," like this one of King's Landing from "Game of Thrones":

The word "minecraft" is a portmanteau of two verbs: to mine and to craft. Punching a dirt block and retrieving a dirt block to build with is the first verb -- the mining. When you start "Minecraft," it's the first thing you should do.

Once you've retrieved enough blocks, the second thing you'll need to do is craft: combine the resources you've mined to create more complex tools. "Mining" for wood (punching a tree) enables you to create basic tools. Those basic tools enable you to mine more complex resources, which enable you to create more complex items and tools.

It's this highly satisfying cycle of mining resources and creating from those resources that draws in millions of players around the world. And that's the most basic level of "Minecraft."

These green, exploding monsters are exclusive to the "Survival" mode of "Minecraft" -- if you just want to create ad infinitum, there's a "Creation" mode that enables exactly that. No day/night cycle. No enemies. No mining if you don't want to mine. Just endless creation.

Minecraft is a creation game that allows users to create worlds or learn to survive in pre-generated worlds.

Freedom. Expression. Creativity. Infinite. These aren't words you'd associate with traditional games you'd find in stores, play for a few weeks, then throw onto a shelf to collect dust. Minecraft is a form of expression that has no true conclusion. As long as your imagination is flowing, the game keeps on going. Many people who play Minecraft understand this, and those who don't may question why Minecraft is the most important game of this generation.

To understand why Minecraft breaks the rules of traditional games, you need to first understand that Minecraft is not a game, but rather, a toy. Minecraft is the modern, digital equivalent of Legos. You take these digital cubes and build anything your heart desires. While Minecraft is addictive in nature, it is addictive for all the right reasons. Minecraft is a medium for you to express raw, unfiltered creativity, and allows you to explore potentially untapped regions of your imagination to create what you otherwise wouldn't have been able to.

If you didn't understand Minecraft before, you might be able to understand it now. The appeal of these digital Legos is vast and truly infinite. It can inspire any gender and any age group. Minecraft's language is unlimited and universal. Raw creativity knows no bounds, particularly in a digital universe where the only limit of your creations is yourself. The only limitation of Minecraft is time. It is, otherwise, limitless, and there are some great shortcuts, cheats, and walkthroughs that make it even better!

Last Minecraft version is 1.18.2
