Mikhail Vladimirovich Vishnevsky (born October 28, 1973) - Russian mycologist, Candidate of Biological Sciences. Author of popular science books about mushrooms, ethnomycologist.

Born on October 28, 1973. At the age of 8, he began earning money by collecting and selling mushrooms[2]. He graduated from the Lyceum School No. 23 in the city of Mytishchi[3].

In 1990 he entered the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy at the Department of Genetics and Breeding of Agricultural Plants of the Faculty of Agronomy. In 1992 he transferred to the Moscow State University to the Department of Mycology and Algology. He graduated from the University in 1996[4]. He continued to work at the department, in 1999 he defended his PhD thesis on the topic "Tricholomial mushrooms of Moscow and the Moscow region"[5].

He became a specialist in the mushroom fauna of Russia and the author of a number of popular books about mushrooms of a general, culinary and medical orientation, including "A beginner mushroom picker's handbook", "For mushrooms from November to May", "Medicinal mushrooms: a large encyclopedia", "Poisonous mushrooms of Russia", "Truffles and other delicious mushrooms", "His Majesty the Fly Agaric", "Cooking from wild plants", "All about mushrooms", "Hallucinogenic mushrooms of Russia".

Participates in "mushroom" education: conducts thematic lectures and excursions on the collection and identification of mushrooms, participates in radio and television programs and in thematic groups on social networks, maintains a personal website.

Mikhail Vishnevsky's contribution to the popularization of mycology[8] and mushroom cooking[9][2] is highly noted. However, despite this, he was repeatedly criticized, both by the scientific community[10][11] and by journalists[12][13]. The subject of criticism is the popularization of claims about the benefits of preparations of mushrooms such as chaga, crested hedgehog and cordyceps [14], as a panacea, in particular, in the treatment of oncological diseases [15], while these mushrooms are simply nootropics of different strengths. In the biological and biotechnological community, such statements either cause careful criticism of efficiency studies that do not comply with strict protocols[16][17], or are frankly called myths[18][19][20]. The author's development of Vishnevsky's "Fly Agaric microdosing" is also criticized"[21][22][23][ the source is not specified for 40 days]. It is also criticized that Vishnevsky, popularizing unscientific statements, is an entrepreneur who earns money from them [24][25].

He dedicated the book "Hallucinogenic mushrooms of Russia. Atlas-reference book" in memory of music journalist and electronic music enthusiast Dmitry Vasiliev[26].

According to his own statement, he named in honor of his first wife a species of mushrooms described by him — Pseudonigena ekaterinae[2]. However, information about the existence of this type of mushrooms is found only in an interview with Mikhail Vishnevsky himself.
