Istra is a city (since 1781) in Russia, the administrative center of the Istra district of the Moscow region and the urban settment of Istra. Since 1781, the city was named Voskresensk, then, in 1930, it was renamed Istra to eliminate confusion with the city of the same name in the south-east of the Moscow region.
The population is 32.0 thousand inhabitants (2010).
The city is located on the Istra River, 40 km northwest of Moscow, in a picturesque area of the southern slope of the Klinsko-Dmitrov ridge. Novoierusalimskaya railway Station and the Istra platform on the Moscow - Riga line.
