Since 1930, she has been a political commentator in Berlin, writing, in particular, for the New Statesman. Denounced Nazism. In 1936, she was arrested by the Gestapo and expelled from the country the following year.

She was born in the family of a German emigrant and an Englishwoman.

Graduated from Cambridge (1921) in history. She prepared a doctoral dissertation, but according to the results of the defense she was awarded only the degree of Master of Literature (MLitt).
