1993’s Mystere became the first permanent Cirque du Soleil show. Performed in a theatre custom built to accommodate the complexities of the show, Mystere lit up the Las Vegas strip and became a required stop on any Vegas trip. Mystere still fills its theatre after two decades of residency in Las Vegas, dazzling generations with its artistry and beauty. Cirque du Soleil was here to stay, and in the following years expanded to conquer Asia, Europe, and South America with a series of new shows that tour the world, filling large arenas with modern circus fans.

Cirque du Soleil made waves in the international scene for the first time in 1987 upon their first tour of the US. We Reinvent the Circus stunned Los Angeles Festival fans and media alike with its unique approach to the circus. Detailed set design, a stage flanked by seating on all sides, and dynamic audience interaction- with audiences being engaged with both physically and imaginatively- pioneered the refined template that is found at the core of every new Cirque du Soleil show thereafter. After sell out shows in San Diego and Santa Monica, We Reinvent the Circus spearheaded Cirque du Soleil’s first overseas tour of Europe in 1990.

Cirque du Soleil has Awesome Costumes and Colors

Now that they have great circus acts, Cirque du Soleil starts to be different than any other circus shows. The first difference that is noticeable are the costumes. They are simply gorgeous.

It is true that all circus companies have colorful costumes and careful makeup, but at Cirque du Soleil costumes are way cool. They fit with the theme of the show and they are carefully thought out and crafted. Their costumes are beautiful.

Cirque du Soleil has Superb Scene Composition

Everything in a Cirque du Soleil show is well planned and thought out. It feels like a large Hollywood production where every detail is carefully crafted. Each circus act starts and end with a beautiful composition of bodies, costumes, light and music.

Cirque du Soleil has Amazing Acrobatics

It is circus after all! And as such it has to be great circus at its core. Otherwise they would not even be able to start. They have the entire circus acts: clowns (sophisticated ones ), amazing acrobatics and jugglers. There is one traditional circus act missing: there are no animals period.

My understanding is that Cirque du Soleil hires the best acrobats from all over the world. They hire the best of the best. All their acts are awesome. But great acrobatics is not enough for a circus shows that stands out.
