Bucknell University (BU) is a private, undergraduate university based in the Liberal Arts. The school is located in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and was founded in 1846 by William Bucknell. Bucknell University offers around fifty majors and sixty-five minors to its students through its three specialized colleges: the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Engineering, and the Freeman College of Management.While it is primarily an undergraduate university, BU offers a small number of Master's Degrees in selected fields. Bucknell offers small class sizes of twenty students on average and boasts a 9-1 student-faculty ratio. The university operates on a semester system. Bucknell offers students the option to design their major through the university's Individual Interdepartmental Major.

The enrollment as of 2020 was 3,695 undergraduate students. According to its admissions page, Bucknell currently has approximately 64 percent of the students enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences, 19 percent in the College of Engineering, and 17 percent in the Freeman College of Management. In the 2022 edition of Best Colleges is National Liberal Arts Colleges, Bucknell University ranked #38. It is considered a difficult school to get into and currently has an admissions rate of about 34%.

History

In 1846, the University at Lewiston was established, becoming the 100th American college in order of founding. The school did not become Bucknell University until 1886. It gained its new name in honor of William Bucknell, who was a major benefactor at the time and one of the original trustees named in the charter establishing the University at Lewisburg. On August 20, 1851 the university held its first commencement for a graduating class of seven men. The school allowed women to attend university classes beginning in 1883 and had its first African American graduate in 1875.
