Overview

Agora.io is a developer platform that provides broadcast, voice and video calls for mobile and web applications through their software development kit (SDK). Agora.io was founded by Tony Zhao in 2013 and is listed on the NASDAQ under the ticker API.

The company reported an annual revenue of $133.6 million USD for 2020, increasing 107% from 2019. Aside from a double in active users during the 2020 fourth quarter, the company has also gained notoriety for being the technological backbone of Clubhouse, a popular audio chat social media app. Agora also serves a number of large Chinese technology companies including Xiaomi, Momo, New Oriental, Bunch, and Kumu.

Stanford Internet Observatory identified Agora to be at risk for potential data vulnerabilities, claiming any unencrypted data transmitted on Agora's servers could be accessed by the Chinese government. Despite Agora claiming a security patch within seventy-two hours of the report to to ensure privacy safety, Clubhouse reported an unidentified data breach in their chat rooms shortly after on February 21, 2021.

The company operates a building platform that provides easily used, customizable APIs to embed video and voice operations into separate application infrastructures. Agora offers access to "Software-Defined Real-Time Network" (SD-RTN) to monitor and optimize engagement channels.
