Advent Technologies is materials and technology development company operating in the fuel cell and hydrogen technology space. It develops, manufactures and assembles the critical components that determine the performance of hydrogen fuel cells and other energy systems.

Advent SA was founded in Patras, Greece by a team of researchers including CEO and Chairman Dr. Vasilis Gregoriou whereby they identified a novel engineering plastic that conducted protons at high temperature in the absence of water. The company incorporated in the United States in 2012 and established its headquarters in Cambridge, MA, USA.

In 2014 Dr Emory De Castro joined Advent and enhanced their catalyst and electrode capabilities. The company engaged in research and development, receiving grants from the Department of Energy and the European Union such as leading the effort in a DOE grant "Facilitated Direct Liquid Fuel Cells with High Temperature Membrane Electrode Assemblies;" developing membranes for redox flow batteries on the ARPA-e IONICS program with United Technologies R&D and Harvard University; converting CO2 to methanol under the ARPA-e REFUEL program with Skyre and Northeastern University; and electrolyzing water to hydrogen with low cost, high output materials on the DOE HydroGen program with Northeastern University and the University of Delaware.

Products

Fuel cells: In particular, ht-pem fuel cells that uses Hydrogen, Renewable Fuels (eFuels, eMethanol), DME (Dimethyl Ether), Biofuels, Methanol, Ethanol, Ammonia, Natural Gas, and other liquid or gas hydrogen carriers to produce electricity and heat. When methanol is used, the fuel cell is called a Reformed Methanol Fuel Cell.

It produces the Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA), which is a very important electrochemical element of the fuel cell. MEAs determine to a large extent power, efficiency, lifetime, weight, size, overall performance, and ultimately cost of a fuel cell.

Flow Batteries: It also produces membranes and custom electrodes for redox flow batteries.

Electrolysis: It has licensed and is developing technology that can be used for high-temperature steam electrolysis (for the production of hydrogen from renewable energy sources)

Organic Photovoltaics: The company also offers electron donor conjugated polymers for organic solar cells.
