Accion Systems was started in order to further space exploration. The company was founded by Louis Perna and Natalya Bailey, in 2014, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States.

Accion Systems has developed proprietary propulsion products per the purpose of providing electric propulsion to satellites of all sizes. Their primary product line is called TILE. The systems utilize electrospray thrusters to offer small satellites with ultra-low-weight propulsion to sustain orbital maintenance and collision avoidance. The thrusters use ion engines that produce thrust from an ionic liquid propellant, which is a safe, non-toxic liquid salt. The engines don't use large ionization chambers, pressurized tanks, valves, or external cathodes.

The thruster technologies that Accion Systems has developed is centered around a thruster chip. Their thruster chips house hundreds of microscopic emitters that produce beams of ions generated from their ionic liquid. Electric fields accelerate the ions which escape through small holes in the extractor grids in the thruster chips, causing a force to push the spacecraft.
