Tor is short for The Onion Router and was officially released on September 20, 2002 by The Tor Project Inc. Tor is a free software tool and volunteer operated server network that improves its users privacy and security by randomly routing their internet activity through a series of virtual tunnels instead of making a direct connection. User activity through Tor is often compared to the layers of an onion because their activity is layered in the Tor network in ways which obscure the users identity and information. Tor can be used to hide IP addresses, run anonymous servers, and browse the dark web. In 2013 a document from the American described Tor as "The king of high secure, low-latency anonymity".
