Respironics is a developer and manufacturer of medical devices for respiratory ailments. The company specifically focuses on diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea, oxygen concentrators for patients requiring supplemental oxygen, infant apnea monitors for infants at risk of SIDS, as well as asthma-treatment devices and hospital ventilators.

History

Respironics was founded in 1976 when founder Gerald McGinnis opened the company's first manufacturing facility for anesthesia masks. Previous product research and manufacturing occurred in the founder's kitchen.

The company introduced their first continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine for the treatment of sleep apnea in 1985. In 1988, the company went public. In 1992, the company received a patent for bi-level technology, originally intended for improvement on the CPAP but expanded into use in the treatment of breathing disorders such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

On December 21, 2007, Respironics announced it entered into a merger agreement with Philips. Philips acquired Respironics for $66 per share for a total approximate price of $5.1 billion.
