PokerStars is the largest online resource for playing poker in the world.

The game is played for "play money" or American dollars (as well as euros, British pounds and Canadian dollars), with stakes from $0.01/$0.02 to $1000/$2000.

On average, at least 90 thousand players play on the site at the same time. During "peak hours" or during popular tournaments, their number can reach 280 thousand. The total number of registered users is 115 million.

The company was founded by natives of Israel, father and son Isai and Mark Sheinberg.

The beta version, where it was possible to play only for play money, was released on September 11, 2001, after 3 months the game for real money began.

The company was originally registered in Costa Rica in the name of the Israeli Scheinberg family.

Later, the company moved to the Isle of Man, whose legislation was even more suitable for it.

In 2004, analysts valued PokerStars at $2 billion, making it one of the largest in the industry.

In 2006, the U.S. Congress passed amendments to the gambling law, as a result of which some large companies like PartyPoker, fearing ruin, were forced to leave the American online gambling market, while PokerStars, having found additional reserves, seized their segment has become the industry leader.

In 2009, its turnover amounted to 1.4 billion dollars, and profit - 500 million.

In December 2011, the company managed to set a Guinness World Record: more than 200,000 players played in a tournament with an entry fee of $1 prize pool of $300,000.

On June 16, 2013, PokerStars set a new record for the number of participants in the tournament: this time, the tournament with a prize pool of $300,000 managed to reach 225,000 players.

In 2014, PokerStars was sold for $4.1 billion to Amaya Inc.
