Murakami Flowers

Murakami Flowers is an NFT collection designed by artist Takashi Murakami. The collection stays true to Murakami's style of characters and art inspired by 1970s Japanese TV games, but the NFTs are digital, pixelated interpretations of his real-life artworks.The collection was developed with the number 108 as inspiration, which is a reference to the Japanese word bonnō, meaning "earthly temptations." In the collection, the NFTs are made of a combination of 108 different backgrounds and flower colors to make up a field and there are also 108 fields.

Murakami initially tried to launch his collection in the spring of 2021 but ended up withdrawing the project from NFT marketplace OpenSea, citing smart contract issues. The collection was officially launched around a year later in 2022, right before the crypto crash of that year. The NFTs were being sold at a fraction of the price they were estimated at during the false launch in 2021.

According to the Murakami Flowers website, the NFTs were released in phases with people on the whitelist and family and friends having access to the collection first. The NFTs were released as "seeds" that would be revealed during the public sale, so the purchasers had no idea which NFT they would be getting or its rarity. A public sale followed with 6,751 NFTs available via lottery. The purchases were limited to one NFT per MetaMask wallet.
