Meru is a start-up building generative AI solutions for enterprise search, aiming to make it easier for businesses to manage, access, and share their data. Customizing generative AI models at scale can be challenging and time-consuming. Meru helps developers utilize generative AI, creating hyper-personalized, user-specific content for applications. Meru's managed cloud offers multiple generative models and customization techniques, making them available through a set of API calls. Meru claims its customized, task-specific LLMs demonstrate similar results to well-known models while running faster, running on commodity CPU hardware, and allowing businesses to deploy them on-premises. The company's technology trains smaller models for specific problems so developers can replace generic endpoints with more responsive Meru endpoints.
Meru is focusing on developing generative models for enterprise search and the efficient transfer of business data. Potential benefits of Meru's solution include the following:
- Transferring knowledge internally between employees, enabling improved processes such as developing an intelligent agent trained on the company's best practices for onboarding
- Transferring knowledge externally to clients and making a better client experience by uploading relevant knowledge to a private server and quickly creating an intelligence agent
- Summarizing and analyzing data to create reports, summaries, and more
Running on-premises, Meru allows businesses to share proprietary information around their organization, hosting a centralized intelligent interface.

Models supported by Meru include stable diffusion for stable diffusion and OpenAI models for language completion and editing. Meru offers a basic free subscription for individuals looking to index and query personal documents; paid subscription tiers for teams and agencies; and a custom price plan.
Meru was founded in December 2022 by CEO Rohan Arora and CTO Venkat Krishnan. Arora previously worked at John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory on MLOps and modeling the Covid-19 national health mission. Krishnan previously worked at Tesla Autopilot. The company was part of the Y Combinator early 2023 batch, receiving $500K in funding. Meru launched on January 27, 2023.
