Logically is a UK-based technology company that uses AI to identify harmful misinformation and deliberate disinformation online. Logically works with governments, NGOs (non-governmental organizations), and enterprise organizations to help people access accurate information, identify threats, and reduce harm from online content. The company combines AI and expert intelligence to identify harmful content and analyze emerging threats, ingesting media sources and “all public posts on major social media platforms” to identify those that may be problematic.
The company now operates out of two separate business units:
- Logically—focusing on public health, public safety, national security, and elections. Work is conducted by a team of technology and OSINT (open source intelligence) analysts with support from the company's AI-powered intelligence platform, Logically Intelligence. Logically identifies narratives and threats assessed as being harmful, as defined by the client. This includes threats to institutions, people, property, or processes, as well as violations of the law.
- Logically Facts—an independent fact-checking unit delivering products and services to social media partners. The Logically Facts team is completely independent from the rest of the company. Logically Facts works with Meta and TikTok in the UK and Europe, helping to assess content in accordance with their publicly accessible policies for content moderation.
Logically performs investigations into emerging misinformation narratives and has research partnerships with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, The University of Sheffield, and the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. The company's research goals include the following:
- Stimulating research to combat multimodal and multilingual disinformation
- Designing theoretical research frameworks, taxonomies, interdisciplinary approaches, and methodologies to combat misinformation
- Improving information attribution and segmentation methods to detect narratives, influencers, and campaigns
- Developing practices and tools that can mitigate online harms and digital threats
The company's UK headquarters is in Brighouse, Yorkshire, with additional UK offices in London and Leeds. The company is active in the United Kingdom, United States, and India, with offices in Arlington, Virginia, and Mysore and Bangalore in India.
Logically was founded in 2017 by CEO Lyric Jain, while he was a student at Cambridge University. He was motivated to start the company after witnessing the Brexit debate on platforms such as Twitter. He first developed a machine-learning algorithm to identify harmful online misinformation while spending a year studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Jain has described the company's early AI approach as:
It works in the same way that a human would go about the process of identifying fake news... They would look at where the news has been published; who the author is; whether they have any expertise in that field; whether they refer to any primary sources; and ask if the language they’re using is too emotive... It cross-checks against official statements and other news outlets and tries to find articles which might be slightly different or even contradictory. Those articles would then be juxtaposed on our platform – users can choose which one to read while their logical accuracy would also be assessed. It can determine whether the argument they are using is coherent and come up with a final prediction of how accurate a piece of information is likely to be.
A year after its founding, in 2018, the company had raised £1 million in funding ($750 thousand) and employed thirty-eight people. In August 2019, Logically announced a $7 million seed round from undisclosed investors. On November 23, 2020, Logically secured £2.5m in funding from NPIF – Mercia Equity Finance and XTX Ventures—the venture capital affiliate of XTX Markets, a leading global algorithmic trading firm.
On February 3, 2021, Logically announced a partnership with TikTok in the UK. Logically's technology and human reviewers help TikTok to determine whether content shared on the platform is false or misleading.
On March 16, 2022, Logically announced $24 million in funding led by Vitruvian Partners with participation from the Amazon Alexa Fund and existing seed investors XTX Ventures and NPIF – Mercia Equity Finance. Logically Facts, the business unit working with social media companies, was launched on April 5, 2023.
