Overview

Depeche Mode is a synth pop band originally founded in Basildon, Essex, United Kingdom in 1980. One of the most enduring and influential bands to emerge from the 1980s, Depeche Mode has been active for more than forty years and has sold over 100 million records worldwide. The group consists of a trio of Dave Gahan (lead singer and songwriter), Martin Gore (keyboardist, guitarist, singer and songwriter), and Andy Fletcher (keyboardist).

Depeche Mode's original lineup consisted of Gahan, Gore, Fletcher, and Vince Clarke, a fellow Basildon musician. After the release of the group's debut album, Speak & Spell, in 1981, Clarke left the band and later founded the synth-pop duo Yazoo with Alison Moyet. Alan Wilder joined Depeche Mode as a live keyboardist in early 1982 and became an official member by the end of that year. The band continued to record and tour as a foursome until Wilder left the band in 1995.

Depeche Mode has released fourteen studio albums and over fifty singles to date. The group's most successful album is 1990's Violator, which reached the #2 position in the UK and #7 on the US albums chart. The album sold over 8 million copies worldwide and spawned several successful singles, including "Enjoy The Silence," which peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. In total, Depeche Mode has had seventeen singles appear on the Hot 100 chart.
