Arthur Compton was an American physicist born on September 10, 1892, in Wooster, Ohio . He was educated at the College of Wooster , the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) , the University of Chicago , and Princeton University . Compton held the United States citizenship and was best known for his work in Compton scattering, Compton wavelength, Compton–Getting effect, and Compton generator .

Arthur Holly Compton, as he was also known , had Owen Willans Richardson as his doctoral advisor . Among his many doctoral students were Luis Walter Alvarez , Robert S. Shankland , Piara Singh Gill , Winston H. Bostick , Darol Froman , and Francis Rudolph Shonka .

In recognition of his achievements, Compton received the 1927 Nobel Prize in Physics . He passed away on March 15, 1962, in Berkeley, California .
