Luis Walter Alvarez was born on June 13, 1911, in San Francisco and died on September 1, 1988, in Berkeley, California. He was a physicist and inventor, with citizenship in the United States.
Alvarez received his education at San Francisco Polytechnic High School and graduated from the University of Chicago. He was a doctoral advisor to Richard A. Muller and Lawrence H. Johnston, while his own doctoral advisor was Arthur Compton. Luis Walter Alvarez was also the father of Walter Alvarez.
Throughout his lifetime, Alvarez received numerous awards and recognitions. He received the 1968 Nobel Prize in Physics, was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1978, and earned the Medal for Merit. Other notable awards include the Albert Einstein Award, the National Medal of Science, and the IEEE Honorary Membership.
