Willard Libby was an American chemist born on December 17, 1908, in Grand County, Utah. He is best known for his development of radiocarbon dating.
Libby studied at Princeton University and the University of California, Berkeley. His doctoral advisor was Wendell Mitchell Latimer. Two of Libby's notable doctoral students were F. Sherwood Rowland and Maurice Sanford Fox.
In 1960, Willard Libby received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on radiocarbon dating. He was also awarded the Elliott Cresson Medal for his contributions to the field of chemistry.
Libby passed away on September 8, 1980, in Los Angeles.
