The Samara tramway was put into operation on February 12 (February 25), 1915. The system is one of the oldest in Russia. The first streetcar was driven by engineer Pavel Sutkevich, who headed a group of engineers of the Samara streetcar construction project (Sveshnikov, Malkin, Dzhunkovsky, Yarv, Voznesensky, Sheindlin, Prokhorov, Rokhlin). The opening was attended by representatives of the City Duma and clergy - the first run was consecrated by Bishop Michael of Samara and Stavropol. The first route connected the streetcar depot on Polevaya Street with Alekseevskaya Square (now Revolution Square).

There are 25 streetcar routes in Samara. There are 423 cars, most of which are Czech-made: Tatra T3SU, Tatra T6B5 and Tatra T3RF. In addition to Czech-made cars there are also forty-three 71-405 cars manufactured by FGUP Uraltransmash, twenty-one 71-623 model cars, nine AKSM-62103 model cars and ten 71-631 model cars. There are three depots in the city: City, Kirovske and Severnoe. Streetcar is the main type of public transport in Samara.
