Stokely Carmichael was born on June 29, 1941 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. He held citizenship in Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, and Guinea. Carmichael was a politician and human rights activist, primarily known for his work in the United States during the Civil Rights Movement. He passed away on November 15, 1998, in Conakry, Guinea.
Carmichael was educated at Howard University and the University of Toronto Mississauga. He was married to South African singer and civil rights activist Miriam Makeba. Carmichael was a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement and later changed his name to Kwame Ture in honor of African leaders Kwame Nkrumah and Ahmed Sékou Touré. He was also a collaborator with H. Rap Brown, another influential activist.
One of his most notable works is the book "Black Power: The Politics of Liberation", which explores the concept of Black Power and its role in African American politics and civil rights.
