Michael Rockefeller (1938-1961) was an American anthropologist and photographer. In addition to his studies at Harvard University, he was interested in the Asmat people of Papua New Guinea, where he met his untimely death.
Rockefeller was born in New York City on May 18, 1938. He held United States citizenship and was a part of the famed Rockefeller family.
During his life, Rockefeller showed great interest in art and anthropology, which led him to pursue a degree at Harvard University. This education further expanded his interest in exploring and documenting remote cultures, with a particular focus on the Asmat people.
Michael Rockefeller's tragic death at the young age of 23 in the Asmat Regency remains a topic of interest and speculation. Though his life was cut short, Rockefeller left a lasting impact through his photography and anthropological work in Papua New Guinea.
