Melvin Calvin, also known as Melvin Ellis Calvin , was a chemist, engineer, biochemist, and biologist born on April 8, 1911, in Saint Paul, Minnesota . Calvin passed away on January 8, 1997, in Berkeley, California . He was a national of the United States .
Calvin studied at various institutions, including Michigan Technological University, the University of Manchester, the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities), and Central High School (Detroit) . While pursuing his doctoral degree, Calvi's advisor was Michael Polanyi . He later mentored doctoral students such as Cyril Ponnamperuma and Jan Anderson (scientist) .
Melvin Calvin is best known for his discovery of the Calvin cycle , which earned him the 1961 Nobel Prize in Chemistry . In addition to the Nobel Prize, Calvin also received the Davy Medal .
