Leon is an open-source AI-powered personal assistant developed by Louis Grenard. Leon is described as the user's "virtual brain," providing automation in their virtual life. Users can interact with Leon using voice commands and text prompts. The assistant is built on a modular architecture, giving users flexibility to create or use packages/modules that fit their needs. Leon uses AI models, including natural language processing, text-to-speech (TTS), speech-to-text (STT), and others to interact with users. A number of TTS and STT cloud solutions can be integrated with Leon, including Google Cloud, AWS, and IBM Watson. Leon is available under the MIT license. The assistant can be run on the user's own server, allowing them to control their data, use third-party tools, and run the assistant offline.
Leon is funded by sponsors who contribute a monthly amount. Grenard has stated that while Leon's core will always remain open source, he has plans to monetize Leon in the future.
French developer Louis Grenard released the first Leon beta on February 10, 2019. He started working on voice-controlled personal assistants at the end of 2016 after being inspired by a video of Mark Zuckerberg interacting with a tech system by voice. Six days after launch, Leon was ranked first on the main GitHub trending page. Seven days after launch, it had 1.7k stars on GitHub.
