History

Leeds city was originated as an Anglo-Saxon township on the bank of River Aire and grew as a market center. The town has served as a cloth-finishing center for vast area. The woolen industry of Leeds gained significant importance in engineering, pottery, linen manufacture with the development of the industrial revolution all around the world. Leeds growth and development were further enhanced by introduction of the railway. Factories are concentrated in the southern and eastern areas of the city where food processing chemical industry, as well a furniture industry hold greater importance.

Culture

Film industries around the world started growing when Leeds became the first country to make first-ever films. The very first motion pictures were filmed by Louis Le Prince who was an artist who belonged to Leeds.

There are a large number of historic buildings in the city including Leeds Corn Exchange and Leeds Town Hall. In 2013, a larger performance venue was inaugurated. In the 21st century architectural landscape known as Trinity Leeds in enclosed by a glass roof. There are many cultural institutions in the city including Leeds Grand Theatre as well as Opera House.
