Overview

The Knowledge Engineering and Machine Learning group (KEMLg) is a research group at the Technical University of Catalonia (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, UPC) focused on AI. The group's primary research aim is the analysis, design, implementation, and application of different AI techniques and methodologies to support the operation or behavior analysis of real-world complex systems or domains across several industries, including healthcare, environmental processes, social and internet-based systems, and the industrial and enterprise sectors.

Research efforts are divided into the following areas:

  • Assistive technologies and ambient intelligence
  • Intelligent decision support systems and recommender systems
  • Knowledge discovery and data mining
  • eCommerce, semantic web, and distributed intelligent systems
  • Electronic institutions, organizational theory and multiagent systems
  • Computational argumentation
  • Networks and social systems
  • Machine learning

The group has been active in AI since 1988, making contributions to the field across a number of subjects, including intelligent agents development, understanding of coalition setting dynamics, social structure dynamics analysis, formal model construction for norms and conventions for e-commerce, information flow process design, temporal episode-based reasoning, experience-based argumentation techniques, hybrid methods in statistics and AI, belief or bayesian networks, case-based reasoning, knowledge-based systems, supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques, knowledge model identification and knowledge model building, knowledge representation, ontologies, social networks, semantic web, web services, and directory service study.

A major area of expertise is the development of Environmental Decision Support Systems (EDSS) using AI techniques. In particular, the group is involved in urban wastewater treatment plants. KEMLg is funded by both national and European-funded projects and contracts with companies and organizations. Additionally, some group members are involved in start-ups in the ICT environmental sectors. KEMLG is formed by members of the department of computer science and belongs to the software department (LSI) as part of the Intelligent Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (IDEAI). Ulises Cortés created KEMLg, the first stable AI research group at UPC, by the end of the 1980s at a time when research groups were not formally recognized entities in the university's system. KEMLg was later certified as a consolidated group by the Catalan government, receiving a certificate of excellence.
