James Weldon Johnson (born June 17, 1871) was an American diplomat, writer, poet, novelist, songwriter, composer, lawyer, jurist, and politician. He was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and held citizenship in the United States.

Johnson received his education from several institutions, including Fisk University, Columbia University, Clark Atlanta University, and Stanton College Preparatory School. Notably, he authored the novel "The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man".

In addition to being a multitalented artist and intellectual, Johnson also served as a diplomat; he represented the United States during his career in this role. He passed away on June 26, 1938, in Wiscasset, Maine.
