James Rainwater (born December 9, 1917) was an American physicist, also known as Leo James Rainwater. He was born in Council, Idaho. Rainwater received his education at the California Institute of Technology and Columbia University. His occupation was a physicist.

Rainwater was a doctoral student of John R. Dunning and was the doctoral advisor for Val Logsdon Fitch. He was awarded the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physics. Rainwater passed away on May 31, 1986, in New York City.
