Hans Bethe (1906-2005) was a German-born physicist and astronomer with citizenship in both the German Reich and the United States. Born in Strasbourg and died in Ithaca, New York, Bethe made contributions to the fields of physics and astronomy throughout his career.
Bethe was educated at various institutions, including Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Goethe University Frankfurt, Sapienza University of Rome, and the University of Cambridge. His doctoral advisor was Arnold Sommerfeld.
During his career, Hans Bethe supervised several doctoral students, such as George Irving Bell, Peter A. Carruthers, Walter McAfee, Jeffrey Goldstone, Robert Marshak, Roman Jackiw, David J. Thouless, J. J. Sakurai, Francis E. Low, and Mark Samuel Nelkin. His father was Albrecht Bethe.
Hans Bethe's notable works include the Bethe lattice, Bethe ansatz, Bethe formula, Bethe–Slater curve, Mott–Bethe formula, and Bethe–Feynman formula. In recognition of his contributions to the field of physics, Bethe was awarded the 1967 Nobel Prize in Physics.
