FreeWorld's program matches people that have criminal histories with resources that help them find jobs. The nonprofit organization was created by Jason Wang, who was incarcerated at age 15 and experienced challenges with finding employment after serving a twelve-year sentence in Texas.
The organization's team trains participants as truck drivers and offers them assistance in finding jobs for a period of three years following graduation. The program and education are held online, and the average time from application to graduation is sixty days. The organization partners with trucking schools to enable participants to get behind-the-wheel experience.
After a participant is employed, they are required to allocate a portion of their salary to assist the next person in going through the program, with $150 from their monthly income going toward the next student for twenty-four payments.
FreeWorld also connects participants with support, provides transportation, and helps them get required documents like birth certificates, social security cards, and IDs. The organization can also help with repairing credit scores, providing automated financial coaching, and conducting transition planning.
