DESERTEC is a foundation that promotes the production of renewable energy in deserts. The project aims at creating a global renewable energy plan based on the concept of harnessing sustainable powers from sites where renewable sources of energy are more abundant and transferring it through high-voltage direct current transmission to consumption centers. The foundation also works on concepts involving green hydrogen. Multiple types of renewable energy sources are envisioned, but the natural climate of the deserts is key to creating the plan.
Many companies and organisations were inspired by the plan. One organisation that aims to use the deserts for energy production is the DII (Desert Industrial Initiative), a consortium of companies.
The DII evolved in several steps. The first idea was to focus on the transmission of renewable power from the MENA region to Europe. The next idea focused on meeting the domestic demand. The project failed twice due to the problem of transportation and cost-inefficiency. The initiative was revived in 2020 with a focus on green hydrogen, catering to both domestic demand and exports to foreign markets.
The team of the DESERTEC Foundation consits of people, who believe that another world is possible. Committed to turn Vision into Reality, each team member works pro bono to support the mission.
— We raise awareness for the benefits of DESERTEC and the energy-potential of Desert Regions
— Promote the establishment of the political and economic framework conditions necessary for a global transition to renewables
— Support knowledge transfer and scientific co-operation
— Foster exchange and co-operation with the private sector
