Deborah Hurwitz is an American composer, conductor and singer/songwriter who has worked on award winning productions. She is best known for her work with the Cirque du Soleil and the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Jersey Boys. She has also worked on multiple Broadway, Off-Broadway and touring musicals, on numerous films and television shows, and with musicians such as Cyndi Lauper, Cher, Gloria Estefan, Marc Shaiman, Sarah Brightman, Sinead O'Connor, and Johnny Mathis.

Early life and influences

Hurwitz was born in Harrogate, England and is a dual citizen. She trained as a concert pianist and played her first major solo debut at the age of 12. After attending Cherry Hill High School East in New Jersey, she graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Theory and Composition.

Career
Composer

Hurwitz has scored films and television shows, interactive media, and live shows, such as On the Fly Productions An Enchanted Evening: A Cirque Love Story. Commercially, Hurwitz has written, arranged and produced music for national commercial campaigns including Old Navy and Capital One, and television shows including Sesame Street, America's Got Talent, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Bravo's Million Dollar Listing, and Guiding Light, amongst others.

Conductor

Hurwitz conducted for the Broadway musical Miss Saigon and the original US company of Mamma Mia! before conducting and performing with the Broadway company of Jersey Boys for its first six years of production. She is the Music Technical Designer and Synth Programmer for Jersey Boys worldwide, including companies in Chicago, Las Vegas, Toronto, London, Singapore, South Africa, Utrecht, Melbourne and Sydney, as well as National Tours in the US and UK. In 2011, she served as the Music Director for Cirque du Soleil's IRIS: Journey Through the World of Cinema with an orchestral score composed by Danny Elfman. In 2014, she was the Music Supervisor for the Off-Broadway production Bedbugs: It's a Musical.

Performer/Recording Artist

Hurwitz has released two independent albums as alter ego Deborah Marlowe. Her single "Mirror" reached #25 on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales charts and she was featured on CNN Radio and Voice of America as an emerging voice in contemporary music.

In 1992-1993, she played first keyboard in the US tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Aspects of Love. She has toured with Cyndi Lauper and Cher as a keyboardist, vocalist and synth arranger, and has performed on The Tonight Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall and twice at the White House.

She also served as an associate professor at the Berklee College of Music and taught master classes at Lincoln Center and USC's Thornton School of Music.

Hurwitz also served two terms on the Executive Board of the organization Music for Autism, which provides autism-friendly, interactive concerts developed specifically for individuals with autism and their families.
