Daniel Ellsberg (born July 4, 1931) is an American economist, writer, and former military officer. Born in Chicago, Ellsberg holds citizenship in the United States. He is known for his role as a whistleblower.
Ellsberg received his education at multiple institutions, including Harvard University, Harvard College, Cranbrook Schools, and Cranbrook Educational Community. During his time at Harvard, he studied under doctoral advisor Joseph B. Kershaw.
Currently located in Berkeley, California, Ellsberg is the founder of the Freedom of the Press Foundation. He has two children -- Robert Ellsberg and Michael Ellsberg -- the latter of whom he is the father.
