Consumer Electronics Show is an annually held electronics and technology exhibition trade show that takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada. The show attracts approximately 100,000 attendees each year and 2,000 companies or exhibitors. CES is a trade-only event meant for people in the technology industry; it is not open to the public. CES involves thousands of companies exhibiting their most unique and innovative technology from the past year.
Consumer Electronics Show was first held from June 24 to June 28, 1967 in New York City. In 1972, the show moved to Chicago, and in 1973 it was hosted twice a year. In 1978, the show was still hosted twice a year, but once in Chicago and once in Las Vegas, taking place in June and January respectively. In 1995, the annual Chicago show was cancelled in favor of hosting the annual June event in different cities around the United States. The annual June show was then cancelled entirely in 1997, after both the 1995 Philadelphia show and the proposed 1997 show in Atlanta were cancelled, and held exclusively in Las Vegas thereafter.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in complications of CES's 2021 and 2022 shows. CES's 2020 show was unaffected by COVID-19, as it was held in early January 2020 before the virus was first detected in the United States. The 2021 show was held entirely virtually for the first time ever due to the pandemic.
CES 2022 is being held both physically and virtually. The event is scheduled from January 5 to January 8, 2022 in its usual Las Vegas venue, the Las Vegas Convention Center. Physical attendees and exhibitors are required to provide proof of full vaccination against COVID-19, wear face masks inside the convention center, and are recommended to perform rapid self-tests before and during the event.
As of December 29, 2021, numerous tech companies have cancelled their in-person attendances at CES 2022 due to a resurgence in COVID-19 cases, including T-Mobile, Microsoft, Google, and AMD for a total of over forty companies.
