CYFS is a web3 technology intended to realize a complete decentralization of Web3. It was founded to re-invent basic web protocols, such as TCP/IP, DNS, and HTTP, to create the necessary infrastructure for the complete decentralization of Web3, which was co-developed by W3 Storage Lab. CYFS has an architectural design in which everyone brings their own "owner online device (OOD)" to form a decentralized network. Further, CYFS defines Web3 as the following:
- Web3 allows everyone to have the right to save data on the internet, publish data, and get income from data.
- Web3's internet applications are completely decentralized; developers have the right to publish and update applications, and users have the right to use them permanently.
- Web3's data has been determined ownership when generated and uses Trust Link to link together to form the "data-ownership network," which is the future semantic web that allows data to show its true value.
CYFS was developed after six years of research and development and was published as an open-source design that allows it to be stable and open to community-driven research and development. Further, CYFS offers what some call "next-generation" Web3 dApps, which are different from other Web3 dApps, which are essentially "Web2 plus blockchain" apps that have limited functionality due to the inherent limitations of blockchain.
The architecture of the CYFS blockchain is developed to create what CYFS considers to be true decentralization. This is partially achieved through the upgrading of the basic protocols of the web (including TCP/IP, DNS, and HTTP). To achieve this, the core design is developed of the following parts:
- Design of NamedObject and double-section construction of Object Link
- The BDT protocol improves TCP/IP: the network protocol evolves from address-oriented to trusted identity-oriented
- MetaChain upgrades DNS, realizes decentralized addressing, and realizes Data is Account
- The Owner deploys its own server OOD (Owner Online Device) on the network, which supports the decentralized accesibility of cyfs://
- Design proofs of the storage and proofs of service based on the game-based consensus theory of dispute before going on the chain, and realize the decentralized high reliabiity and high availability of cyfs://
- The off-chain delivery of computing resources is separated from on-chain matching, and an evolvable economic model is used to build decentralized shared cloud computing
- Data property rights analysis based on the input and results of trusted computing, to realize the evolution from on-chain smart contracts to off-chain Data Exchange Contract (DEC)
- The service of Web3 DEC App is installed on everyone's OOD, realizing the decentralization of application services

To help build a complete decentralization of the web, CYFS works for the following:
- User data is an asset—In Web2, all user data belongs to the application operators, while in CYFS, all user data generated (texts, pictures, comments, chat records, code commits, and etc.) are all developed into NFTs and are the user's assets; this allows users to own their data and profit from their data.
- Freely publish user content—The content published in Web2 can be deleted by application operators at any time, which can be unreliable. In CYFS, users can use a content-oriented, immutable cyfs:// to publish their content and let others access it with no latency; the process is decentralized, and no one can remove or restrict content, which works to guarantee everyone the right to publish content equally on the web.
- Contents can be cross-app—Web2 is app-centric, while CYFS is content-centric through cyfs:// allows user content to be referenced by all CYFS apps as long as it is published. In this way, CYFS achieves a "Semantic Web as Web3."
- Freely run an app—Applications on CYFS are also completely decentralized. An app, like data, is under the developer's control and cannot be shut down or have its functions changed by others; developers are given the right to publish and update, while users have the right to use them.
- Freely sell users storage space—In CYFS, computing resources are decentralized, and users are able to sell their spare storage space to allow others to back up their data and profit from it.
- Completely decentralized DAO application—In CYFS, a decentralized DAO application can be built without centralized servers for truly decentralized applications.
How CYFS develops decentralization
To help with the development of dApps on CYFS and to accelerate a transition to the CYFS blockchain and community, the organization launched a CodeDAO Web3 Hackathon, held during October of 2022, to develop interest in the community. The Hackathaon, sponsored by CYFS and CodeDAO, was co-organized by Fog Works (formerly W3 Storage Lab), Alinweb3, Eta Omega Chi, Metacubes, and Beta Fellowship.
