BPS commercializes wave and tidal energy products that incorporate biomimicry into their designs. Its ocean energy products are designed to avoid extreme forces by using light-weight construction. The proprietary bioWAVE and bioSTREAM products are designed for multiple units to deliver utility-scale renewable power to onshore distribution grids.
bioSTREAM is a system that extracts energy from tidal currents which is based on the concept of an oscillating hydrofoil. The incorporation of biomimicry, by borrowing traits from undersea plants, allows the product to have a slow multi-directional movement which BPS claims does not have the negative environmental impacts of traditional rotary turbines.
The bioWAVE is a submerged device that sways beneath the ocean waves. It captures energy from the waves and converts it to electricity with a BPS's O-Drive module. Electrcity is delivered to consumers onshore via subsea cable. Each BioWAVE is several stories high and can produce 250kW of power, which can support approximately 200 houses.
In 2015 BPS completed the installation of its 250kW bioWAVE pilot demonstration near Port Fairy, Victoria. BPS received funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and from the Victorian Government.
