BELLE BAKER

December 23, 1893 - April 29, 1957

American singer and actress. Well-known performer in the ragtime genre.

She was born into a family of Russian Jews.

Baker's movie career was quite short. She appeared in the cinema when the Great Silent gave way to his more talkative counterpart, making her sound film debut 'Song of Love' in 1929 - a film which survives to this day. Baker sang two songs in the picture, written by her second husband. She played in two more films, 'Charing Cross Road' (1935) and 'Atlantic City' (194 4), and that was the end of her relationship with the film industry.
