AlphaTauri, also known as Scuderia AlphaTauri, was established as a Formula 1 racing team in 2006, formed from the ashes of the Minardi team. Previous to 2020, the AlphaTauri team was known as Toro Rosso. Driving from 2006 to 2019 as Scuderia Toro Rosso, the team launched the careers of talents who became stars of Formula 1, including Sebastian Vettel, Max Verstappen, and Daniel Ricciardo. The team has worked with diverse engine suppliers, including Cosworth, Ferrari, Renault, and Honda. The team has achieved one race win, one pole position, one second place in Brazil, and a third place in Germany.
The team is a sister team, and often considered a junior team to the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team, with young drivers joining AlphaTauri to learn Formula 1 and improve before being promoted to the Red Bull Racing Team. The approach was given validity with the success of Sebastian Vettel, who won his first grand prix in a Toro Rosso in 2008 before going on to achieve four world championships with parent team Red Bull Racing.
The change of name from Scuderia Toro Rosso to Scuderia AlphaTauri was announced in September 2019. The name change was selected to promote their parent company, Red Bull's, fashion label of the same name. In the first season as Scuderia AlphaTauri, with the Honda powered engine, Pierre Gasly was able to secure the maiden win of the team under the AlphaTauri name.
In the first season as AlphaTauri, the team retained the driver services of Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly. And the team remained with the Honda power unit, based on the deal with the engine developer and parent team Red Bull Racing. The team was able to achieve its first podium finish under the AlphaTauri name at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, which marked Pierre Gasly's first race victory and the first win for a French Formula One driver since Olivier Panis won the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix.
For the 2021 season, AlphaTauri retained Pierre Gasly's service as a driver, and replaced Daniil Kvyat with Yuki Tsunoda. During the season, Gasly was able to score the team's first podium of the year by finishing in third place at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Gasly also finished 4th at the Dutch and Mexico City Grands Prix. Tsunoda finished 4th place at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, his best result of the season.
For the 2022 season, AlphaTauri retained the services of Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda. The team confirmed they would be using the Red Bull-branded Honda engine. The engine, designed and built by Honda, is branded as a Red Bull engine due to Honda's exit from Formula 1 at the end of the 2021 season, and Red Bull's takeover of the Honda engine program. On January 3, 2022, AlphaTauri became the second team, after Mercedes, to leak an image of the AT03 chassis, implementing the sweeping regulation changes for the 2022 Formula 1 season.
