Alcemy, founded in 2018 and based in Berlin, is developing software that uses statistics, computer science, and machine learning methods to predict the compressive strength of cement and concrete.
Their artificial intelligence software works to calculate reliable recommendations for the grain size to be achieved in cement mills and the cement and concrete recipe. These predictions allow manufacturers to use their raw materials and energy as required and avoid over and under strength concrete products. Alcemy believes their solution can lead to savings of over €500,000 per cement manufacturer and plant and saves 10 to 40% savings in carbon dioxide emissions through efficient use of cement.
Low-carbon concrete, especially low-carbon concrete using alternative raw materials, is difficult to make at scale. The fluctuations in raw materials and operating conditions create increased difficulties to produce low-carbon concrete with reliable quality compared to the consistent quality of traditional concrete. And traditional methods of measuring concrete strength can only be done weeks after the concrete has been processed.
Alcemy says using their software gives concrete producers wishing to manufacture low-carbon concrete precise predictions. The predictions are intended to identify and offer production parameters that need to be adjusted for better quality of the finished product, and thereby optimize the product before delivery.
Alcemy also believes their predictive artificial intelligence will allow producers to replace burnt limestone with less expensive, low-carbon materials. And the believe their software and the use of alternative materials will allow concrete and cement producers to avoid payments for carbon dioxide emission certificates in the European Union.
Alcemy was founded in 2018 by Robert Meyer and Leopold Spenner with the intention to solve the problem of carbon emissions in the concrete industry and supply chain using machine learning and predictive artificial intelligence. Alcemy were incubated by Climate-KIC. And they participated in the Entrepreneur First accelerator program as an alumni of Entrepreneur First's BE2 cohort.
