Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai was a Kenyan biologist , veterinary physician , politician , environmentalist , and teacher . She was born on April 1, 1940, in Tetu, Kenya and held Kenyan nationality . Maathai's birth name was Wangarĩ Muta .

She was educated at several institutions, including Benedictine College , University of Pittsburgh , Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich , University of Giessen , University of Nairobi , and Loreto High School, Limuru .

Wangari Maathai passed away on September 25, 2011, in Nairobi . She was the founder of the Mazingira Green Party of Kenya and received the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize . Throughout her life, Maathai was based in her home country of Kenya .
