The Symbolic Manipulation Program (also known as SMP) is a computer system that uses algebraic manipulations. It was designed by Stephan Wolfram and Chris A. Cole. The software can help with conceptual development and theory enhancement. It can be used in various fields of study, including mathematics, theoretical physics, and engineering to aid researchers with large algebraic equations.

Product

SMP contains four parts: syntax, computation operations, non-computational operations, and interface operations. The syntax consists of numbers, symbols, patterns, and more, all of which can have their properties defined by the user. The computational operations allows for the user to control the manipulation procedure, which diminishes the amount of time needed for computing.

Non-computational operations include input/output (I/O) operations and the interface operations enable SMP to generate other higher level language codes, such as FORTRAN and C. The software also contains a computer library consisting of mathematical functions.
