Sun Ra

Sun Ra, born Herman Poole Blount on May 22, 1914, was a multi-faceted artist who was known as a musician, composer, bandleader, pianist, and philosopher. He was educated at Alabama A&M University and A. H. Parker High School. Throughout his career, Sun Ra explored various music genres such as jazz, bebop, free jazz, swing music, hard bop, jazz fusion, avant-garde jazz, space music, and experimental music.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Sun Ra also worked as a writer, keyboardist, composer, music director, actor, poet, and music arranger. He changed his name legally to Le Sony'r Ra. Sun Ra was born and passed away in Birmingham, Alabama. His death occurred on May 30, 1993.
