Sizzle AI is a company using artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) to provide interactive learning experiences, described as a "free AI tutor for everyone." Sizzle is building a direct-to-learner product through an AI learning app initially targeting high school and college students but with a broader goal of using AI to make learning more accessible, personalized, fun, and engaging. Users can access Sizzle's educational AI models through the company's website and app, available on both iOS and Android. Sizzle leverages LLMs from third parties such as OpenAI and develops its own in-house models. The company has stated its AI accuracy rate is 90%.
Sizzle provides users with step-by-step solutions to math, language, physics, chemistry, and biology problems. It targets a range of learning abilities, from middle school and high school to AP and college. The app breaks down complex questions into steps to reach the answer, with users able to ask for definitions and ask follow-up questions in a conversational manner. Additional Sizzle features include a grading capability, a feature that regenerates steps, an option to see multiple answers to a single problem, and the ability to upload photos of assignments, allowing the platform to guide them through the solution. Unlike other AI-powered learning apps that provide an instant answer, Sizzle aims to act as a tutor chatbot, guiding students through steps leading to the answer for a better learning experience and knowledge retention.
Based in New York City, Sizzle AI was founded in 2022 by Jerome Pesenti, a former vice president of AI at Meta. Pesenti described the idea behind the company:
After leaving Meta, I was inspired to leverage AI to truly help students and non-students no matter what kind of background they come from, the school they attend, or how many resources they have... I felt that applications of AI haven’t had a clear positive impact on people’s lives. Using it to transform learning is an opportunity to change that.
The company has built a team with backgrounds from Meta, Google, Twitter, and Twitch. The app launched in August 2023, and by September 20, 2023, it had already been downloaded over 20,000 times. On August 22, 2023, Sizzle announced a $7.5M seed round led by Owl Ventures with participation from 8VC and FrenchFounders. Upon launch, the app is entirely free to use. The company has stated that while it plans to add a premium offering and in-app purchases, the version of the app for solving step-by-step problems will remain free. The app is only available in English, but the company plans to include additional languages in the future.
