Robert Daniel Carmichael (1879-1967) was an American mathematician known for his work in number theory. Born in Goodwater, Alabama, he later obtained his education from Princeton University. Carmichael is notable for his contributions in developing Carmichael numbers, Carmichael's theorem, Carmichael function, and Carmichael's totient function conjecture.
During his academic career, Carmichael had George David Birkhoff as his doctoral advisor and taught several doctoral students, including James Johnston Dobbie, Marvin Moore, and W. T. Martin. Robert Daniel Carmichael passed away on May 2, 1967, in Merriam, Kansas.
