The agency was founded in 2005 by Vitaly Bykov, Valery Golnikov and Sergey Ilmanov. A year earlier, Golnikov announced on LiveJournal that he was planning to publish a book of children's fairy tales, Bykov responded to the message and volunteered to help with the layout. Together they decided to create an illustrators agency along the way, earn on client service and commissions, and came to Ilmanov for money - he offered $10,000 for a 34% share of the future agency.
The name Red Keds came from the characters drawn by Valery Golnikov, most of whom wore red sneakers.
