The Red Hot Chilli Pipers are a Celtic rock band from Scotland. Founded in Glasgow in 2002 by Stuart Cassells, Kevin MacDonald, and Willie Armstrong, the band got its name after Cassells's then-girlfriend accidentally filed a Red Hot Chili Peppers CD in with his traditional bagpipe music, mistaking "peppers" for "pipers." The Chilli Pipers rose to fame in 2007 after appearing on the BBC reality show "When Will I Be Famous?" and winning first place and £10,000. The band's performances consist of bagpipe-heavy covers of rock and pop classics, a genre they have nicknamed "bagrock."
In addition to traditional rock instruments such as guitars and keyboards, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers feature a rotating cast of forty to fifty bagpipers. Live shows generally consist of three bag pipers backed by a five-to-seven piece band. The Chilli Pipers have achieved gold and platinum albums in Scotland as well as the UK. The band tours extensively worldwide, having averaged 200 gigs per year before the COVID-19 pandemic.
