Rabbi Aryeh Cohen is an American rabbi, professor, social justice activist, and lecturer. During his time at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he studied philosophy and Jewish thought. Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies ordained him a rabbi and Brandeis University awarded him a Ph.D.
At American Jewish University, Aryeh Cohen is professor of Rabbinic literature and chaired the Rabbinic Studies program from 2001-2005. He was a past president of the Jewish Progressive Alliance and a board member of Rabbis for Human Rights - North America. His teaching experience includes Hebrew Union College/Jewish Institute of Religion, Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, and Brandeis University.
Between 1995 and 2000, Rabbi Aryeh Cohen served as Chair of Jewish Studies in the College of Arts and Science. In addition, from 2001 to 2005, he was the Ziegler School's Chair of Rabbinic Studies.
Furthermore, Rabbi Aryeh Cohen taught at a number of other universities. The Hebrew Union College/Jewish Institute of Religion, the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, and Brandeis University are among them.
Furthermore, Rabbi Aryeh Cohen co-founded Shtibl, a Hassidic egalitarian minyan. Together with egalitarianism and social justice, it combines the passion of ecstatic prayer.
Jewish Veg released a statement in 2017 calling on all Jews to adopt a vegan diet. Rabbi Aryeh Cohen joined other rabbis in signing the statement.
Additionally, he has written two books: Rereading Talmud: Gender, Law and the Poetics of Sugyot and Justice in the City: An Argument from the Sources of Rabbinic Judaism. Moreover, Rabbi Aryeh Cohen co-edited Beginning/Again: Towards a Hermeneutics of Jewish Texts.
Aharon Shmuel Tamares and Emmanuel Levinas have also been the subject of his writings. Cohen's study of Tamares and Levinas "makes a compelling case in his own right for the counterproductive nature of violence under all circumstances," according to Andrew Flescher.
In addition to his book Rereading Talmud: Gender, Law and the Poetics of Sugyot, he is co-editor of Beginning/Again: Towards a Hermeneutics of Jewish Texts. Additionally, he is a member of the Sh'ma advisory board and an editor of the on-line journal Textual Reasoning. The contemporary Jewish scene, social justice, politics, and Talmud are some of Cohen's subjects of interest. His writings on these topics and others have appeared in Conservative Judasim, Sh'ma, The Journal of Jewish Thought and Philosophy, The Association of Jewish Studies Review, Tikkun, The Reconstructionist, Kerem, The Jewish Spectator, The Jewish Journal, and online at Jewschool.com and Jspot.org.
